A surprising number of adults aren't aware that cataracts are the primary culprit for blindness amongst adults over the age of 54. In reality, more than 50% of senior citizens have some amount of cataract development.

What is a cataract?

A cataract is a clouding of the eye's clear lens. This inhibits the transmission of light necessary for proper vision.

How do I know I have cataracts?

Many people over 40 attribute vision loss with age however cataracts do have some signs that are distinct from normal age-related eyesight problems. Depending on the type of cataract, you may experience slightly hazy vision, increased glare from sun light or artificial light or a decrease in the brightness of color. Some cataracts show no symptoms until they are more advanced while others may even result in what is known as second sight'' or a temporary improvement in near vision.

Cataract comes from the Latin cataracta meaning ''waterfall''. This may be because the appearance of white opacities in the lens is similar to the white cloudy rapids seen in a waterfall. Senile cataracts, which occur in the elderly usually start off with an initial opacity in the lens, followed by swelling and shrinkage of the lens resulting in eventual blindness.

Preventing and Treating Cataracts

Researchers have not found fail-safe ways to avoid cataracts but some say that protecting your eyes from UV rays with sunglasses can reduce cataract development. Some studies show that taking antioxidants and reduced consumption of salt can also be preventative.

While early vision loss can be helped with visual aids such as eyeglasses or magnifying devices, at some point vision may deteriorate to a level to require surgical treatment. Cataract surgery is in fact the most frequently performed surgery in the United States and is typically very successful. In most cases, the surgeon removes the clouded lens and replaces it with a clear plastic lens called an IOL (intraocular lens). In nine out of 10 patients, they are able to restore vision to between 20/20 and 20/40.
