Halloween is a time for getting out and getting dressed up but you wouldn't want the fun to lead to some scary eye damage.

A popular costume accessory as of late has been decorative contact lenses and the trend is alarming eye care professionals. Contact lenses are a governmentally regulated medical device. It is against the law to sell contact lenses without a license which applies to costume and party supply stores, however obviously the laws are often ignored. Unlicensed production may use subpar materials or even toxic coloring elements to color the lenses. Additionally, wearing contacts without proper fitting and care, can cause critical harm to the eyes such as infection, abrasion or even vision loss.

For those who do wish to use decorative contacts, it is essential to make an exam appointment with your eye doctor first. After a comprehensive eye exam, the optometrist will determine the correct size, curvature and if needed prescription required for the lens. The optometrist will also give vital guidance on proper handling and cleaning of contacts.

Use of contacts without taking appropriate precautions in handling them can lead to infections, inflammation, or more severe corneal scratches or sores. The eyes are a serious matter and nothing should be put in them without proper instruction from an eye care professional.

Only purchase lenses from a licensed seller that you can be sure comply with all FDA regulations. Non-corrective lenses must also be regulated and need a prescription. Beware of websites, open markets or party supply stores that may sell homemade products tinted with dangerous tinting agents. To determine whether the retailer has a license to sell contact lenses find out their state license number and call the state Department of Professional Regulations (DPR) to check.

If your Halloween disguise just won't be complete without special effect lenses, consult with your local optometrist to discuss your options. Halloween shouldn't be a "Hallowed" night for your eyes. Be aware of the dangers unsupervised contact use can be to your eyes.
